Germany should actually be able to connect its residents to the 21st century. If it weren’t for the perfectionism of the engineers, the fear of the educated citizens and the shattered fiber optic dreams of Helmut Schmidt.

The internet is still bad, even though Helmut Schmidt had a plan. In 1981, his cabinet decided that the “Deutsche Bundespost” should quickly build a “broadband fiber optic network”. Back then, fiber optic was a futuristic technology – data transmission through light! Germany, it seemed, was on the way to the future.
