How do you regulate self-determined death? – Opinion

“And now people die properly. Oh yes.” An ancient colleague who is dear to me said this sentence years ago. I keep thinking about him in the debate about euthanasia. Dying decently: what is it, how does it work? In a spectacular judgment two years ago, the Federal Constitutional Court gave everyone the right to a self-determined death; it has allowed any kind of assisted suicide, it has lifted the ban on assisted suicide associations because there is currently hardly any reasonable help available – and instructed the legislature to write a euthanasia law.
