“My character based everything on absolute control, explains Diane Kruger to 20 minutes. The return of passion to a well-regulated existence destabilizes it. I know women like her. »
The director of Black Box offers a playful film, a thriller rich in references to Alfred Hitchcock, Brian De Palma and David Lynch following this female victim who loses her footing without it being immediately clear whether she is mad, lucid or manipulated.
“Everything is shown from the point of view of the heroine, explains the director. The spectator sees everything through his eyes and feels his loss of bearings. This “perfect woman” does not remain so for very long in the face of the stress of nightmarish situations.
A solitary performance
“I was often alone in the image, remembers Diane Kruger. I had to imagine what my character is going through without having anyone to give me the answer. It takes a certain maturity for that. I couldn’t have played this role when I was younger. »
At first rigid in her uniform, devoid of the slightest crease, the protagonist gradually softens until she becomes the victim of premonitory hallucinations. “Yann Gozlan made me work a lot, especially the swimming scenes and those where I’m driving,” explains Diane Kruger. Acquiring these gestures was more difficult than acting out more psychologically complex scenes, but it helped me a lot in building my character. »
A straight-up staging
A staging of diabolical precision takes the young woman into a formidable gear magnified by plans cut with a cord. Aesthetics is a key element to promote suspense by placing the heroine in chilling settings and sending her to Tokyo for a very scary sequence.
“I would like the public to get carried away in this story which multiplies the pretenses by underlining the talent of Diane”, declares Yann Gozlan. The actress has rarely been as well highlighted as by this virtuoso director.
