In the summer of 2019, Tina Dura is standing in rubber boots in the alluvium on the island of Sitkinak in northwest Alaska. A seaplane brought her and three colleagues here. The US geologist from the Virginia Tech state technical university in Blacksburg grabs a steel rod with a half-open cylinder two inches long attached to the end. She sticks it into the silt like cookie dough and pulls out a sediment sample. In this, Dura is looking for an answer to the question of how seriously Los Angeles is threatened.
