Game of Thrones fans can finally return to Westeros in the new HBO series House of the Dragon. The new trailer shows that there will be more familiar things to see than initially expected.

It was a cultural phenomenon of a rare kind. When the new “Game of Thrones” episode aired, millions of fans in the United States met at home or in bars with friends to experience the TV event together. In Germany, many followers watched the new episode in the morning before work to be protected from spoilers during the day – and to be able to chat with the other fans among their colleagues about what was happening in Westeros. It’s no wonder that the expectations for the first offshoot “House of the Dragon” are extremely high. The new trailer now shows that fans will feel at home very quickly.

Although “House of the Dragon” takes place almost 200 years before the well-known adventures of the Stark family, part of the trailer could also be taken directly from the main series. Dragons circle the well-known towers of King’s Landing, a pan later we’re in the so-familiar throne room with the iron throne, over which we’ve witnessed so much intrigue and battle.

Familiar names, new faces

At the latest when faces can be seen, this impression is gone. The king on the throne, Viserys Targaryen, should only be known to fans by name: Queen Daenerys’ brothers also bore his name. The names of the others in the room also trigger pleasant nostalgia: the leaders of Houses Stark, Lannister, Baratheon and Velaryon have come to swear allegiance to Viserys and his daughter and heir to the throne, Rhaenyra. But although the trailer continues with a feast and dancing, the dramatic music and the conversations cut into it make it clear that things are going to be different.

“We’re playing a dirty game. Are you ready to win it,” asks a slightly greasy-looking adviser, while arguments and fights are repeatedly countered. It is also mentioned that the coronation of a woman on the Iron Throne will not please everyone – before an unknown figure is given a burial at sea. Experienced fans suspect immediately: The intrigues surrounding the throne will also keep the (still) ruling Targaryen family busy again.

The Fall of the Dragons

The white-haired ancestors of the Khaleesi Daenerys are also the confirmed main characters of the spin-off. While the Stark family in “Game of Thrones” had the sympathies of the audience on their side until the end, the trailer already indicates that Rhaenyra’s uncle Prince Daemon seems rather unreliable. Unlike Daenerys, they don’t have to laboriously raise their dragons first – they fly on them over the capital in the trailer. The fans know: In the end, the huge beasts will be exterminated and their skulls will be covered with dust in the basement of the castle.

Until the case of the house Targaryen comes on the screens, the fans have to be patient: From August “House of the Dragon” will appear weekly in ten episodes.
