“House of the Dragon” – leading actor warns of sex scenes and carnage

A few days before the start, actor Steve Toussaint is heating up the expectations. He assured that the series has quality and meaning, but that nobody has to do without nudity, sex scenes, horror and carnage. But within reason.

The “House of the Dragon” series is set approximately 200 years before the events of the “Game of Thrones” series – at the time of House Targaryen. Steve Toussaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon, seafarer and lord of House Velaryon. “Game of Thrones” was heavily criticized for its violent depictions and frequent sex scenes in the early seasons. Lead actor Steve Toussaint said: “You walk a fine line between authenticity and superfluity here, and that was certainly the criticism.”

“There’s some sex in it. There will be violence because it’s a violent world. But we tried not to shoot meaningless scenes.”

Lead actress suffered from the nude scenes

That’s exactly what “Game of Thrones” was accused of depicting sex scenes that some critics felt weren’t necessary for the development of the story and characters. There were also scenes of sexual violence, something like that shouldn’t happen again in “House of the Dragon”. Emilia Clarke became famous with the series, the mother of dragons was the young woman’s first notable role. She later explained that she felt “uncomfortable” because of the numerous nude scenes and had to cry because of it. The director of “The House of Dragon” Miguel Sapochnik therefore stated: “I want us to do something that addresses what I think is really important, which is representation and equality.”

Probably more tame

Despite Toussaint’s lurid words, the announcements can be understood in such a way that “House of Dragon” will not continue the rough style of the first seasons of “Game of Thrones”, but that of the last seasons. Despised by the die-hard fans of the GoT universe, the last few seasons have been far more tame. You probably have to do without scenes like Emilia Clarke’s self-immolation, as well as the pure sadism of characters like Joffrey Baratheon or Ramsay Bolton. And probably something like the incestuous relationship between Jaime and Cersei Lannister. A relationship for which Jaime was readily prepared to throw a child who had tracked down the couple down from a tower with the words “What don’t you do for love?”

In the USA, HBO will start on August 21, 2022, in Germany the series will run on Sky on the night of August 22.
