The tourism industry in Germany recovered somewhat in the summer. However, according to the Federal Statistical Office, the number of overnight stays in June was still 39 percent below the level before Corona.

Hotels, guesthouses and other accommodation providers in Germany have benefited from the relaxation of the Corona restrictions in the summer. The number of overnight stays by domestic and foreign guests increased in June by 6.1 percent compared to the same month last year to 30.9 million, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). The number of overnight stays by domestic guests rose by 5.5 percent to 29.0 million, while that of guests from abroad rose by 17.3 percent to 1.9 million.

At the beginning of the holiday season, the “accommodation ban” was dropped in all federal states, hotels, campsites and holiday apartments reopened to tourism. However, the hospitality industry is still restricted by the fact that, for example, the business with overnight stays during large congresses or trade fairs has collapsed.

A good third fewer overnight stays in the half-year

The industry still has a long way to go to the level before the Corona crisis. According to the Federal Statistical Office, overnight stays in June were still 39 percent below the value in June 2019.

In the entire first half of the year, the accommodation providers booked 76.4 million overnight stays, 34.7 percent less than in the same period of the previous year. The slump in bookings by foreign guests was particularly strong, falling by 60.1 percent to 6.2 million overnight stays.

The information provided by Destatis relates to accommodation providers with at least ten beds or ten spaces for camping.
