Hostage taking in Hamburg: Infrastructure needs more protection – opinion

It’s that easy to paralyze a major airport in Germany: just drive your car towards a gate, drive through, and you’re on the apron. The taking of hostages at Hamburg Airport by a father is, of course, first and foremost tragic for the kidnapped daughter and the child’s mother. But the weekend’s events also reveal glaring security gaps. Once again. The activists of the “Last Generation” arrived on bicycles a few months ago, all they needed was bolt cutters to cut through the fences at airports in Berlin, in Düsseldorf and, even there, in Hamburg. The climate activists “just” wanted to glue themselves on, which still brought the airports to a standstill for hours at a time. And as dramatic as the weekend’s Hamburg incident was, one can only be glad that the man didn’t want to hijack a full plane.
