Hospitals in crisis: Essen University Hospital boss in conversation

Essen’s university hospital boss, Jochen Werner, is calling for a radical turnaround in the hospital – and is starting to do it in-house.

Professor Werner, everyone knows that we have a massive shortage of nursing staff throughout Germany. How do we get a grip on him?
With honesty – and by stopping exaggerating this problem so much to others. If we count Germany’s nursing staff, we are not in a bad position in an international comparison. But we have three to four times as many hospitals as comparable countries. It can’t be right if you think it through.
