Which film is the most shocking? Participants in a test watched horror movies while wearing heart rate monitors.

It’s Halloween Horror movie time. Anyone still looking for the real thrill can be inspired by a current study. In “The Science of Scare Project,” participants wore devices that measured heart rate. Equipped like this, they watched scary films. The scientists were able to see which films caused fear and excitement. The researchers’ team found that the scariest scene was in “Insidious” (2010) and the scariest film of all time was “Sinister” (2012).

This is the scariest scene in “Insidious”

The study does not mention which part of “Insidious” made the test subjects’ hearts beat faster. But it’s probably the scene with the demon in the corner. This comes up again and again when particularly scary film scenes are required.

The film is about Josh Lambert (Patrick Wilson, 50) and his wife Renai (Rose Byrne, 44), whose son Dalton (Ty Simpkins, 22) inexplicably falls into a deep coma. In one scene, the boy’s grandmother tells the couple about a dream in which she saw a demon in the corner of her grandson’s room. When the grandmother then looks at Josh, the audience is suddenly surprised by the sight of a red-faced creature standing behind his shoulder.

These are the scariest films

“Insidious” comes in fourth place overall on the Science of Scare Project’s list of scariest films, behind “Host” (second place) and “Skinamarink” (third place). Apparently no horror film could get past the front runner “Sinister”.

In “Sinister” Ethan Hawke (52) plays crime writer Elliot Oswalt, who inadvertently endangers his own family in his obsession with a series of terrible events documented in creepy 8mm footage. The study’s test audience experienced a 34 percent increase in heart rate when watching the film.
