HomeKit issues: Upgrade is reportedly coming back with iOS 16.3

A solution is emerging for smart home issues on iPhone and other Apple devices that users experienced after installing iOS 16.2 and upgrading the home architecture. Users of the second beta version of iOS 16.3 report that the upgrade button is displayed again. This indicates Apple’s testing activities to bring the feature back with the next scheduled operating system update.

iOS 16.3 is still in an early beta stage compared to previous updates. The new version is also said to introduce Fido security keys as a second factor for the Apple ID. The final version of iOS 16.2 was released after four test versions, iOS 16.1 even went through five beta stations. Statistically, four to five test versions up to the finished version are also the rule at Apple – with large upgrades, such as iOS 16.0, even more betas are common. With the so-called point releases, Apple usually allows between 40 and 50 days for the semi-public tests with registered developers and those who have registered for the public beta.

Since beta 1 lasted for a very long time – almost a month – compared to the usual 14 days until the next update, probably due to the holidays and the turn of the year, it could be that the beta phase lasts longer this time. It is estimated that the final version can be expected in February.

The Home architecture upgrade was offered to users via a button in the Home app. It is intended to make smart home control more reliable and faster – especially in environments with complex networks and a large number of smart home devices.

In reality, however, the update meant that some could no longer control their devices. This particularly affected family members who had been invited to control the system and who could then not be invited again. Apple then pulled the upgrade just before Christmas and promised to make it available again soon. Internally, according to a media report, there is talk of a huge problem.
