Homecoming to Uganda: Grandma, I’m back – Munich

For the first time since fleeing ten years ago, SZ columnist Lillian Ikulumet travels to Uganda and meets her family again. It is an African premiere for her daughter. It would be so nice if it weren’t for the shadows. About a homecoming that isn’t one.

5,713 kilometers south-east of my home in Munich, I step out of a plane. I’m back in Uganda now, my daughter Taliah is walking next to me by my hand. She has never been here, neither in Entebbe nor anywhere else in this country. And I haven’t been here for a long time. Seconds after our feet hit the ground, a groan is heard. Taliah has noticed the heat too. Scorching heat in the middle of October. I’m not used to them either.
