Holstein Kiel continues to march undeterred towards the Bundesliga. The “Storks” won 1-0 (0-0) at Hamburger SV on Saturday evening and remain second division leaders. HSV, on the other hand, will probably have to finally bury its hopes of promotion.
Four match days before the end of the season, the Hanseatic League are now six points behind third-placed Düsseldorf, and are currently eight points behind second-placed city rivals FC St. Pauli, who play against Hannover 96 on Sunday. With his goal, Tom Rothe was the celebrated man of the evening for the Schleswig-Holstein team, who were outnumbered from the 73rd minute onwards because Lewis Holtby was shown a yellow-red card.
Schonlau: “We won’t stop”
“That was a very important victory,” said the winning goal scorer and was particularly happy about the 10,000 Kiel fans who had traveled with him: “Of course that helps, especially in such a big stadium, when so many from home are there. That pushes you a lot. “
HSV defender Sebastian Schonlau was satisfied: “It’s really bitter when you see the other team celebrating in your own stadium.” Nevertheless, the HSV captain admitted that his team lacked “the final punch”. While HSV has their next northern duel next Saturday (1 p.m., in the NDR Livecenter) with a guest appearance at Eintracht Braunschweig, the Kiel team will be hosting 1. FC Kaiserslautern at the same time.

Kiels Porath with bad luck at the post
The HSV fans must have taken their breath away shortly after the start of the game when a back pass from Sebastian Schonlau to goalkeeper Matheo Raab almost fell short and shortly afterwards Finn Porath hit the outside post with his long-range shot (2nd).
Kiel put Hamburg under pressure early on; it took until the twelfth minute before the hosts had their first good opportunity: After a quick attack via Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, Robert Glatzel’s shot attempt was blocked and Levin Öztunali’s deflected touchdown missed the Holstein goal.
Reis handball: No penalty, says the VAR
In the period that followed, the guests took some momentum out of the game and HSV now came into play more often on the offensive. However, Kiel’s keeper Timon Weiner was only challenged once when Königsdörffer shot. However, the goal would not have counted because the Hamburg winger was in an offside position (35′).
Kiel was much more dangerous: Steven Skrzybski missed from a promising position (31′), Shuto Machino put the ball just past the post (39′). Shortly before the break, Glatzel missed HSV’s best chance when he turned around his opponent at the penalty spot, but Weiner grabbed it safely (45th).

Immediately before the break, a handball by Ludovit Reis in the Hamburg penalty area caused a stir. Referee Sascha Stegemann consulted the video images, but rightly did not award the penalty: Although the HSV professional’s arm was slightly outstretched, he was shot at from close range rather than an active handball (45th + 3).

Shortly after the restart, Stegemann had to assess another tricky scene when Ignace von der Brempt fell in the penalty area while running in a duel with Kiels Rothe. Here too, the penalty whistle was rightly missed (48th). Shortly afterwards there was a fire in the Kiel penalty area: first Glatzel failed to get the ball over the line from three meters with his chest, then Jonas Meffert stabbed, but his attempt was also blocked (53′).
While the first half was characterized by mutual respect, both teams now played much more risk-taking and with more offensive drive. Holtby missed a good opportunity for the visitors after a counterattack, and Reis was able to clear for a corner (56′).
Shortly afterwards, the ball was in the Hamburg net: First, the HSV defense cleared after a corner from the left, but Holtby crossed again to the right side, where Rothe shot in. The goal also stood up to scrutiny by the video referee – HSV keeper Raab felt hindered by an opponent, Stegemann saw it differently (59th).

Is everything clear now for the league leaders? Not at all: Holtby did his team a disservice, was shown yellow for two fouls within two minutes and was allowed to take a shower early (73′).
So HSV had enough time to equalize with the advantage. And the hosts pressed: Substitute Andras Nemeth only hit the side netting (78′), Reis missed clearly (80′), Masaya Okugawa’s shot was blocked (86′). So the minutes passed, Kiel defended everything at the back and in the end was able to celebrate their sixth win in a row – it was their sixth without conceding a goal.
