Wiesława Brzyś they took her bracelet. They stole Theodor Butler’s watch and Rafał Czeczott’s fountain pen. They forced Peter Will to hand over the suicide note to his family. During their reign of terror, the Nazis abducted millions of people and imprisoned them in concentration camps to hold, enslave or murder them. Before being admitted, the victims had to hand over their personal belongings, their so-called “effects”: jewellery, documents and very banal everyday objects. Today, more than 75 years later, none of the effects are banal anymore. They are often the only keepsakes for people whose loved ones were taken away by the Nazis.
