Joaquin Phoenix plays the lead role in “Napoleon” – but he hesitated before accepting it. Why it’s not easy for the actor to choose a role.

Hollywood star Joaquin Phoenix hesitated before agreeing to star in Ridley Scott’s new film Napoleon. This is normal for him, the 49-year-old told the dpa in Paris. Deciding on a role is not easy because you have to stay inspired for a long time.

But he has a lot to thank the director for: “Ridley was very important in my career. I admire him very much.” As Phoenix explained, the directing legend ensured that he was allowed to appear in “Gladiator”. He achieved his international breakthrough in 2000 with the film in which he played the crazy and merciless Emperor Commodus.

Phoenix: “Napoleon” is not a historical biography

“Napoleon” will be in German cinemas on November 23rd. Phoenix embodies the famous Emperor of the French. The film is not a historical biography, said Phoenix. He concentrates on the characters of the protagonists and their emotions. You also have to be guided by your own instincts.

Phoenix hopes for more films about Napoleon Bonaparte. He is a very exciting character about whom there is a lot to say. “You should make a new Napoleon film every year,” he said.

In “Napoleon” the Oscar winner (“Joker”) plays alongside Vanessa Kirby. The British actress (“Mission: Impossible – Fallout”) interprets Joséphine de Beauharnais, the wife of the most powerful ruler in Europe in the 19th century. Their explosive relationship plays an important role in 85-year-old Scott’s story. “Napoleon” celebrated its world premiere on Tuesday at the Paris Army Museum. Napoleon’s grave is located under the adjacent cathedral.
