Now it’s official: Canadian director Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi saga “Dune” will conclude with a third film.

The successful science fiction film series “Dune” by director Denis Villeneuve continues and concludes with a third part. Legendary Pictures confirmed this to the American industry portals “Deadline” and “Variety”. Villeneuve (56) will therefore end his cinema adaptation of the sci-fi novels with “Messiah”. It was known that the Canadian wanted to make a total of three “Dune” films based on the first two books by Frank Herbert. It remains unclear when the third part will be released in cinemas, but it could be in 2027.

The first part (2021) achieved worldwide sales of around 400 million US dollars (source: Box Office Mojo), an impressive result for a cinema film, especially in the midst of the corona pandemic. Part 2 (2024) currently has a box office total of around 630 million worldwide. “Dune: Part Two” opened in cinemas around five weeks ago – in Germany on February 29th. In Germany, the first part attracted more than 1.8 million cinemagoers, the second even more than 2.5 million.

The material is based on a series of novels by Frank Herbert. The story centers on the desert planet Arrakis. Only there is a special, valuable substance – which is why the planet is exploited by other powers in the galaxy and its inhabitants are oppressed. Villeneuve gathered many stars for his film adaptation, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Florence Pugh and Austin Butler.
