After a year in which the Golden Globe Awards were on the verge of insignificance, the nominations for the upcoming awards were announced on Monday afternoon German time.
The black comedy “The Banshees of Inisherin” enters the race as a favorite with eight nominations. Sci-fi comedy Everything Everywhere All at Once, Hollywood satire Babylon, and Steven Spielberg’s autobiographical drama The Fabelmans also feature in multiple categories. “Avatar: The Way of Water” and “Top Gun: Maverick” are in the running for Best Drama. The German war film “Nothing New in the West” has a chance of winning a trophy in the category of best foreign language film.
Comedy Abbott Elementary, royalty series The Crown and drama-comedy The White Lotus are favorites among the series. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” was nominated five times for the award, including Best Comedy Series. Among the streaming portals, HBO and Netflix are in a close race with 14 nominations each. It was followed by the Hulu platform with ten nominations.
The Golden Globes, which will be awarded in January, are – or were – a harbinger of the Oscars to come. The previous show, however, offered none of the glamor that has made the awards so relevant. After a report by Los Angeles Times had revealed that members of the Hollywood Foreign Journalists’ Association (HFPA), which awards the award, were courted and given lavish gifts by production companies, several well-known actors came forward with harsh criticism.
Signs of hope for the future – the broadcaster NBC is back on board
They complained about the inappropriate behavior of the reporters acting as jurors. Scarlett Johansson, for example, said that at the HFPA press conferences she had to ask questions “that bordered on sexual harassment”. The lack of diversity – none of the then 87 members was black – was criticized. The stars of the industry then announced that they would stay away from the event. It took place as a private event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles, with no red carpet and no television broadcast.
Since then, the HFPA has implemented various reforms designed to prevent corruption and ensure more diversity. The association has also sold the rights to the awards to billionaire Todd Boehly, who is now organizing the awards through a newly founded private company, hoping for “professionalization and modernization” as a result. For example, in addition to the film journalists, external jurors should also decide on the awarding of the prizes.
There is a first sign of hope that the Golden Globes could recover from their crisis: the television station NBC, which broadcast the award ceremony until the crisis year 2022, wants to accompany the upcoming ceremony again. For the time being, however, the agreement only applies to 2023. Comedian Jerrod Carmichael will host the event on January 10th.
