Holidays in the Balearic Islands: nature and tranquility in Formentera – Travel

For a long time, Formentera was considered a hippie paradise, but the islet is now so popular, especially in summer, that the number of guests should be limited. In spring, on the other hand, you are still almost alone with nature.

Sometimes she starts already in the dark. 83-year-old Barbara Klahr then drives at walking pace along the banks of two small lakes in the north of Formentera. “I stop every five minutes and get out where I have a good view,” she says. The ornithologist photographs birds at daybreak, documenting their number and presence for the regional bird protection association GOB. During the spring breeding season, she also cruises the lakes three or four times a day to witness the hatching of young little terns, for example. The tall woman with the short, snow-white hair calls it “proving meticulously.”
