Hofreiter criticizes Scholz: “Nobody explains to anyone what really happened”

DHe Green Party politician Anton Hofreiter has sharply criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) for his communication during the budget crisis. In his government statement last week, Scholz “didn’t explain to anyone what really happened,” Hofreiter told the newspaper “Mirror”. “He provided technical answers, not political ones. I would have liked Olaf Scholz to say that he was sorry for this chaos.”

Scholz should have apologized to the citizens, said Hofreiter. “He is the Chancellor, he bears responsibility.” With a view to the current discussions between Scholz, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) and Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP) on the 2024 federal budget, Hofreiter called for a willingness to compromise.

“I expect all three people involved to be honest and clear about the situation we are in right now,” said Hofreiter. “This is not about an internal German debate for gourmets. We are in a system competition: democracy against autocracy, war against peace.”
