The European Hockey Championships are currently taking place in Germany. The German hockey ladies push themselves from victory to victory. The semifinals are within reach, but the team wants more.

Valentin Altenburg briefly clenched his fists in victory, then the national coach looked ahead again. After the clear 5-0 win of his hockey women against fellow favorites England and thus almost certain entry into the next round, the 42-year-old reminded of the target. “Our stage goal is the semifinals. We definitely want to get in there,” said the coach after his team’s second convincing performance. She struggled against the English at half-time, but then she showed what she’s capable of and made it 5-0 with goals from Lena Micheel, Sonja Zimmermann, Pauline Heinz and twice Jette Fleschütz.

With the home fans in the back: hockey women want to reach the semifinals

“It was hard work against a top opponent. You have to beat this team so high first,” said defensive specialist Selin Oruz. Your team is in a real flow and even after a less than ideal first half you stayed true to yourself. “We’re very self-critical, that’s good. We still have a lot to do here,” said the 26-year-old, enthusing about the atmosphere at the Mönchengladbach Hockey Park. “This tournament exceeds all expectations.” The national coach was also very impressed by the support. “Today the home crowd was the twelfth woman,” said Altenburg.

Now everyone is looking forward to the next game against Ireland on Tuesday (7.30 p.m.) to then complete the round of the last four teams. The current table constellation would bring Belgium as an opponent in the semifinals. This would first of all avoid the record European champions Netherlands. “You’re happy not to meet this top team directly,” said Oruz.
