Watch the video: Historical maps – Google Earth inspires with a hidden function.

Attention history fans: Thanks to a new function on Google Earth, you can rediscover the world with historical map material. You can travel back in time more than 400 years. For this, Google is working with the digitized archive of the “David Rumsey Map Collection”. One of the highlights is a map of New York from the year 1836. It is amazing to see how much nature the island of Manhattan still had to offer at the time. Equally fascinating: The known world as seen on maps from 1587. While the entire continent of Australia is missing, Europe is shown amazingly to scale. To explore the historical map collection for yourself, click the small steering wheel icon to go to the Voyager section of Google Earth.Below You can now find the old maps in the “Levels” tab. Or you can search for the term “historical maps” in the search bar on the page. Each pin now has a different map to discover.
