There are still people who believe that women were created from a man’s rib. So that this is finally clear: The body region from which God created a woman according to the biblical story of creation is called “zela” in Hebrew and that means: “side”. And Adam is not a man at first, but a “person”. Rib slipped into the translation at some point. As a reader, you naturally ask yourself: why are there editors if they don’t notice anything like that?
In the 17th century, some copies of an English-language Bible were printed, where the book of Deuteronomy contains the sentence: “The Lord our God hath shown us his glory, and his great ass.” Bad editing again, because “its size” is meant. Even more ominous is that the sixth commandment there says, “You shall commit adultery.” For real? These mistakes once even cost printers their licenses, as the Archbishop of Canterbury had a very different view of adultery. Today only a few of these Bibles exist. Another one has just been discovered in New Zealand. The so-called Sin Bibles are regarded as the Blue Mauritius of religious studies.
But: is the adultery really a typographical error? Maybe Moses just misunderstood God. Then, for example, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir with their amusing polyamory would be much, much closer to the drinkable infinity. One would now like to call the editorial office on the subject and ask how they see it. But let’s be honest: They really do slip through everything.
