Timothy Snyder sits in a windowless room with bombs detonating in the background. Not real ones, of course, you can hear an art installation in Davos. It is intended to demonstrate to visitors to the World Economic Forum the horror of Russia’s war of aggression. There is also a heartbreaking exhibition showing children sleeping – like six-year-old Julia, one of the Ukrainian children who were kidnapped by Russians after the raid and did not return home until more than 600 days later. Snyder gets a meeting room in the Ukraine House, which the country has rented because he supports Ukraine. He is actually a historian at the elite US university Yale, researching the darkest times of the 20th century. But right now he is dealing with the gloomy outlook for 2024.
