There are some heat waves this summer. If you still want to go hiking when the temperatures are high, you should consider a few points.

Germany has already been overwhelmed by several heat waves this summer. While some retreat to cool places, others want to get out into nature and take advantage of the sunny weather. Going hiking in high temperatures, however, entails some dangers. After all, too much heat puts a strain on the body. That’s why outdoor fans should pay attention to a few things in summer.

Good planning is key in the summer

Being out and about in high temperatures carries the risk of sunstroke or heat stroke. The symptoms of sunstroke range from headaches and nausea to dizziness and disturbances of consciousness. In the case of heat stroke, the body’s regulatory system fails because it heats up too much – this can be life-threatening.

In the morning the temperatures are even cooler and this plays into the hands of the hikers, especially during the strenuous ascent. It is also worth taking the north and west-facing paths, which are more shaded and therefore cooler. Wooded routes are also recommended. In general, you should know your limits and not overstrain yourself, especially on hot days.

If you have a longer tour in mind, it is best to have the most demanding part behind you before the midday heat. Another possibility: schedule a break in the shade exactly when the sun is shining brightly from the sky.

It all depends on the equipment

It is also important to wear the right clothing. That means investing in good sportswear. This is made of special material and dissipates moisture better, which regulates the temperature. Be sure to pack a t-shirt to change into. A jacket or long-sleeved shirt should also end up in the backpack in case there is a wind blowing at the summit. Since the weather in the mountains can change quickly even in summer, keyword thunderstorms, a rain jacket is also a must.

Be sure to use sunscreen with a high sun protection factor before and during the tour. Because the higher you climb, the more you are exposed to radiation. If you want to be on the safe side, you should wear long-sleeved tops. A cap protects the head, sunglasses protect the eyes.

Take enough water with you

The most important thing, however, is to have enough water with you. Take frequent sips from the bottle to help prevent dehydration. If you don’t think about it yourself, you should set an alarm every half hour and drink at least a small sip. It is best to rely on water or isotonic drinks. Also pack snacks to recharge your batteries in between. Muesli bars, fruit or even nuts are wonderful.

However, hikers should also deviate from their plans if it is too hot. Instead of struggling up a mountain, just look for alternatives. Maybe the nearest lake is not far away? The next hike will definitely come.
