Hiker killed by rock fall

A Dutch hiker was killed by a rockfall late Monday afternoon in the Haut-Giffre massif, in Haute-Savoie, gendarmes and firefighters said. The victim, aged 28, was moving with his companion, 25 and of the same nationality, when a landslide occurred “due to heavy rains”, said the gendarmes.

“It happened at Pas du Boret [passage montagnard situé à 1.200 mètres d’altitude]. He received stones before falling heavily and dying. The young woman, shocked, was injured in the face, ”added the firefighters.

On Monday, rains and showers affected most of France, with thunderstorms in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Franche-Comté and Alsace.
