The seven-day incidence of new corona infections continues to rise. The RKI reported an incidence of 169.9 – more than in the third wave in spring. For unvaccinated people, the health risk is now “very high”.
In the current wave of infections, the nationwide seven-day incidence has exceeded the high of the third corona wave in spring. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported an incidence of 169.9 in the morning. On April 26, it was 169.3, the highest value of the third wave at the time. The highest incidence value in the entire pandemic was in the second wave on December 22nd, 2020 at 197.6.
The health authorities reported the new high of 37,120 new corona infections to the RKI within one day. The day before, the number of new infections had already reached the record level of 33,949. However, it is not yet clear to what extent late registrations due to the holiday of All Saints played a role in the development.
A week ago, the value was 24,668 infections. According to the new information, 154 deaths were recorded across Germany within 24 hours. A week ago there were 121 deaths.
The number of corona patients admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was given by the RKI as 3.73 (Wednesday: 3.62). It must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay.
4,342,600 recovered
A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at 4,342,600. The number of people who died with or with a proven infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to a total of 96,346.
Health risk increases
The RKI sees the corona pandemic as an increased health risk. For incompletely or not vaccinated people, the institute changed the risk assessment from “high” to “very high” in its weekly report published on Thursday. “For fully vaccinated people, the risk is estimated to be moderate, but increasing due to the increasing number of infections,” it said.
A week ago, the risk for vaccinated people was only described as “moderate”. The RKI emphasizes, however, that all vaccines available in this country “according to the current state of knowledge with full vaccination effectively protect against serious illness”.
“The situation is very worrying”
Among the reported cases, however, the proportion of fully vaccinated people has increased significantly in recent weeks. It is now more than 60 percent in the age group of people 60 and over. “However, this proportion must be interpreted in conjunction with the high vaccination rate achieved in this age group,” it said – according to statistics, it is over 85 percent.
The current development of the situation is “very worrying”, wrote the RKI. If measures such as masks, spacing, reducing contacts and ventilation do not quickly reduce the number of infections, a further increase in serious illnesses and deaths is to be feared. The treatment capacities of the intensive care units could then be exceeded.
