The children go to school unsuspectingly – when a car drives into their group. Three schoolgirls are seriously injured, one of the girls later dies as a result of the accident.

In front of a daycare center in northern Hesse, a schoolgirl was hit by a car and killed on Friday. Two other girls were seriously injured. The 30-year-old driver also suffered serious injuries, as the police in Eschwege announced.

In Witzenhausen in the Werra-Meißner district, for an initially unexplained reason, the man drove his small car to a group of children who were on their way to their elementary school. The police assumed an accident.

Unfortunately, you have “the sad certainty from a hospital that one of the children injured in the accident has died of his serious injuries,” said a police spokesman on Friday afternoon. The other two children are still receiving medical care: “As things stand, the injuries to these two children are serious, but not life-threatening.”

According to the investigation, the man had turned right off the road shortly before an underpass with his car. He was alone in the car. He drove over a wide sidewalk and saw the group of children on foot who were walking. The journey of the black car ended at a stone wall nearly two meters high. The front of the car was completely destroyed, the letter broke, and airbags were triggered.

Several ambulances rushed to the Gertenbach district. Two helicopters were called in to fly the injured schoolgirls to a clinic. According to the police, the group of students consisted of five or six children. The public prosecutor commissioned an expert to investigate the scene of the accident. A blood sample was taken from the 30-year-old. Investigators want to know if he drank alcohol.

District Administrator Stefan Reuss (SPD) was dismayed. “I am very affected by the terrible accident. My thoughts are with the injured children and their families,” he said.
