Update from October 8th, 5:44 p.m: The parliamentary manager of the Greens in the state parliament, Jürgen Frömmrich, is cautiously assuming that the black-green state government could continue to govern because of the still unknown election results. He said this in front of some media representatives. According to Frömmrich, the alternative to a black-green coalition would be a grand coalition of CDU and SPD if the election results show this constellation and there is no majority for a Hessian traffic light coalition.

Update from October 8th, 5:11 p.m: The Hesse election is the most important political event in Hesse in 2023. Tension is increasing significantly in the Wiesbaden state parliament FR-Journalist Hanning Voigts reports. Numerous media representatives are on site, election parties and TV election studios are set up everywhere. A temporary press center was set up in the plenary hall of the state parliament. Update from October 8th, 4:42 p.m: According to State Returning Officer Wilhelm Kanther, the 2023 Hesse election went without any problems until Sunday afternoon. By the afternoon there was a relatively low voter turnout. By 2 p.m., without postal voters, the average was 27.7 percent, as shown by queries in the five independent cities of Frankfurt, Darmstadt, Wiesbaden, Offenbach and Kassel. At the same time in the last state election in 2018, a figure of 38.8 percent was determined without postal voters. Overall, 67.3 percent of those eligible to vote cast their votes in the state election at the time. However, these values ​​should be treated with caution. The number of postal voters is likely to have increased significantly compared to 2018, said Kanther.

Update from October 8th, 2:50 p.m.: Citizens can still cast their vote in the Hesse election for a good three hours before the polling stations close at 6 p.m. Shortly afterwards, the first forecasts are expected, which are based on representative surveys by the Infratest dimap institute. To this end, the research institute carries out surveys in front of selected polling stations. However, the first reliable projections are expected by 8 p.m.

Hesse election 2023: SPD, Greens, Left and FDP expect losses

Update from October 8th, 12:00 p.m.: The polling stations in Hesse close at 6 p.m. The first forecasts for the Hesse election in 2023 are expected immediately afterwards. What kind of outcome is possible? A coalition of the CDU and the Greens has been in power for ten years. According to the latest polls, both parties could continue their alliance. In addition, a grand coalition between the CDU and SPD would be mathematically possible. It might just not be enough for a traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP.

Compared to its result in the 2018 state elections, the CDU could make significant gains this time. The SPD, which achieved its worst result ever five years ago, is in danger of slipping further. The Greens also have to expect losses, as do the FDP and the Left. Compared to 2018, the AfD could exceed its 2018 result in the 2023 Hesse election. The Free Voters could also improve their previous result. The preliminary result of the Hesse election is expected on Monday night.
