Hell made of stone: After 79 years, granite mining ends at the Flossenbürg concentration camp quarry – Bavaria

79 years after the liberation of the Flossenbürg concentration camp, granite mining at the former concentration camp quarry ends. Many prisoners died during the inhumane work. About the long struggle to protect a historic place.

Stefan Krapf often comes to the place that was hell for thousands of people. It is his second home. When Krapf stands on the edge of the Flossenbürger quarry, he thinks of his childhood. “I spent a lot of time here as a kid,” he says, pulling two photos out of a folder. The first shows his father, a strong man, standing in front of a massive block of stone with tools. “My father was the best stonemason in Flossenbürg,” says the son. An artist, he carved hundreds of monuments out of the light granite. The other photo shows Stefan Krapf himself as a boy sitting on a stone and squinting into the sun. They are beautiful memories.
