Storms have flooded streets and basements in the north and northeast of Germany. Emergency services had to respond to accidents several times. There is still a risk of severe weather – especially in the south and southwest of Germany.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms caused several police and fire brigade operations in the north and northeast of Germany until early this morning. Overall, however, the problems in the affected areas during the night were limited, as the police control centers in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania announced in the morning.

Accident on the A20 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania there was an increase in accidents due to heavy rain. Near Neubrandenburg, a driver overturned his car on the A20 in heavy rain.

The driver suffered minor injuries, police said. The car skidded on the wet road due to improper speed. Otherwise there were no injuries.

A1 near Ahrensburg temporarily closed

In Schleswig-Holstein, the south of the state was particularly affected by the storm. During the night, aquaplaning was common on the roads, said a spokesman for the Southern Regional Control Center. Traffic accidents were the result. No one was injured.

On Wednesday evening, the emergency services also had to be deployed more often because of full basements and flooded streets, as another spokesman said on Wednesday evening. “The water was everywhere where it shouldn’t be.”

The A1 was temporarily closed for around 150 metres between Ahrensburg and Stapelfeld in a southerly direction because the road was flooded. In Hamburg, water on the road caused numerous operations, particularly in the north-eastern part of the city.

Storm passed off lightly in Brandenburg

In Brandenburg, the regional control centers reported flooded streets, some flooded cellars and broken branches. However, the storm was not a major problem there either. There were no injuries.

People also have to be prepared for storms during the day. In Western Pomerania there may be heavy rain lasting several hours and occasional thunderstorms from the morning onwards, as the German Weather Service (DWD) announced.

60 liters per square meter possible in the south

Heavy showers and thunderstorms with heavy rain of 25 to 40 liters per square meter are also possible in southwest Germany from midday onwards.

In the afternoon there will be heavy showers and thunderstorms northwards from the Alps with heavy rain of 25 to 40 liters per square meter in a short period of time. In some places there could also be rainfall amounts of more than 60 liters per square meter.

According to the DWD, further, sometimes severe showers and thunderstorms are possible in the evening and on Friday night, especially in the east of Baden-Württemberg and in the west of Bavaria. The maximum values are 18 to 24 degrees.
