Big blow for German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose center-left coalition suffered a severe defeat in two regional elections. The social democrats of the SPD, the Greens and the liberals of the FDP show a clear decline in Bavaria, the largest region in Germany, and in Hesse, where the ECB headquarters is located in Frankfurt.
According to polls, these two regions remain in the hands of the conservatives, who have made them strongholds. But above all, the far-right AfD party, Europhobic and anti-immigration, is making clear progress and could rank second in both regions.
