Myth 1: Drinking less helps prevent sweating. A risky misconception: No matter how much we eat, we lose fluids when we’re hot. Pollutants and excess salt are excreted through sweat. If we refrain from drinking, the result would be accelerated electrolyte loss and dehydration, accompanied by headaches and fatigue. “Sweating is the body’s air conditioning system. We shouldn’t even think about stopping it,” says Claudia Traidl-Hoffmann, professor of environmental medicine at the University of Augsburg. Therefore, start the day with a glass of water and drink enough (sugar-free, if necessary isotonic) drinks throughout the day, preferably mineral water. “It’s better to avoid alcohol and nicotine,” recommends the expert, both of which promote perspiration and put additional strain on the circulatory system. If you want to sweat less, you can stick to sage tea.
