In the US metropolis of New York, people have to struggle with sweltering heat – every cooling comes in handy. Record temperatures of over 45 degrees were even measured in Canada.

Only the few pools in town have been cool and wet for days. New York is hot, warns Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We feel the summer in New York City. The heat is coming strong today.” It should rise to 100 degrees Fahrenheit – 38 degrees Celsius. De Blasio issues an official heat warning.
“This is serious, serious heat,” said de Blasio. Serious heat. Cooling centers have been set up in public buildings and libraries for those who do not have air conditioning. There is a hotline. Neighbors should watch out for neighbors – especially the elderly. Parents, children – it would be best for everyone to stay inside and exercise little outside.
Electricity supplier warns of blackouts
The electricity supplier Con Edison is already warning of possible blackouts. Something that dense Manhattan already knows from other summers. Nobody panics when the lights go out. “I do what I can, stay in air-conditioned rooms and drive myself down.” “We have three or four drinks and we stay hydrated.”
Also higher up – in western Canada – there is an extreme heat wave. A record temperature has already been measured in the province of British Columbia. 46.6 degrees Celsius in Lytton. The highest temperature ever recorded in Canada, says Sarah Henderson of the Center for Disease Control. “We never had such crazy temperatures. This is unique in the history of this region.”
Farmers worry
Heat thunderstorms, hardly any rain. There are already the first forest fires. And many farmers worry, like raspberry farmer Jaspal Singh Dhaliwal. His raspberries should now change from green to red. But the heat makes them white.
But there are still Canadians who like it hot: Voxpop Canada A man from British Columbia explains on television: “We’ll take it. Sometimes we still have snow in June. We reach for the sun when we can get it.”
