This is not the first time the Greens are using the text of “No beautiful country” in their election campaign.
“No beautiful country”, more precisely the text of the song, was already associated with the election campaign of the Greens in 1985. The publicist Karl Heinz Bohrer wrote at the time:
Antje Vollmer correctly grasps the disgusting language of the CDU Chancellor. But what does the language that it writes itself feel? No beautiful country at this time? Where do we find ourselves, probably under linden trees, in the evening? She doesn’t literally quote the song, but it’s the mood that has had a renaissance in those green circles that it apparently stands for. These circles do not seem to notice that Herr Kohl – a horrible, comical presentation of the scenes in the West German comedy – could appear without difficulty at the Lindenhof in East Westphalia, grinning apologetically: they still had this common ground, why not dare to dance. Vollmer says: ‘In terms of vitality and strength, nothing equals a real country youth festival.’ I do not know. I’m not saying: we’ve had that before. But since Antje Vollmer thought so worriedly about why analogies are not only formed with malicious political opponents, let it be thought out loud: In the beginning it wasn’t just Nazis who raved aggressively about the country and the innocence of the country.
