Hundreds of doctors at the Berlin Charité are on strike

Doctors at the Berlin Charité are dissatisfied with their working conditions and are striking for more pay. Some procedures have to be postponed because of this.
“We are registering a high willingness to strike among our members. Many have the impression that their services are not valued enough,” explained the CEO of the Marburger Bund Berlin/Brandenburg, Peter Bobbert. In everyday medical practice, more and more overtime and additional services are being accumulated.
In the collective bargaining negotiations with the Charité, the Marburger Bund is demanding, among other things, a wage increase of 12.5 percent, an increase in night bonuses and the introduction of a new bonus for work in off-peak times. According to its own statements, the union has tried to reach an agreement with the Charité in three rounds of negotiations so far. “The offer presented, of a 2.3 percent linear wage increase for 2024 and 2025 as well as a theoretical reduction in weekly working hours to a uniform 40 hours, is completely inadequate,” criticized the union in a statement.
Because of the strike, planned and non-urgent interventions were postponed, a Charité spokesman said upon request. Affected patients were therefore contacted. “We will carry out time-critical tumor operations, transplants, operations on children, care for patients after strokes, heart attacks and other emergencies.”
