Göring-Eckardt: Don’t abuse Corona processing
The pandemic is still creating a mood against democracy, says Göring-Eckardt. The Bundestag Vice President calls for an ideology-free reappraisal.
“I am convinced that not everything was wrong, not everything that was implemented and demanded was right,” said Göring-Eckardt. “That’s understandable in a situation that’s never been seen before.” It is right to process these prudently and respectfully, “also in order to heal wounds in society that the coronavirus has caused.” She added: “This also means that the critics of the Corona policy at the time also ask themselves whether they had ignored the fears and worries of their fellow human beings about the unknown too much.”
Göring-Eckardt said it would have been wise to have a transparent debate in the German Bundestag at the beginning of the legislative period about what the country could learn from the pandemic, including with regard to its own parliamentary decisions. “We should make up for this. Only openness will take the heat away from the arsonists and conspiracy theorists.” Democratic control was not suspended during the corona pandemic.
Four years after the start of the corona pandemic, calls for a review of state policy to contain the virus had recently become louder. On Wednesday, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach appeared open to reviewing crisis management, but called for an appropriate approach. “I believe that we as the federal government have to think about it: what is the wisest form of coming to terms with it,” said the SPD politician. “And it has to be forward-looking, so: What lessons do we learn from the pandemic?”
