“He tarnished the greatest success of Spanish women’s sport”, regrets the boss of La Liga

Luis Rubiales probably didn’t need that to be cornered. The forced kiss of the president of the Spanish football federation (RFEF) on the mouth of La Roja striker Jenni Hermoso, on Sunday during the ceremony following the final of the Women’s World Cup, is thus criticized from all sides in Spain , starting with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. But no one, since the start of this immense controversy, had yet knocked down Luis Rubiales with as much insistence as the president of the Women’s Liga, Beatriz Alvarez Mesa. In a text she published on Tuesday, the leader (in office since 2021) confides as follows: “I am ashamed of the global image that Spanish football gives because of the unacceptable behavior of the president of the RFEF”.

Beatriz Alvarez Mesa does not want to focus on this Rubiales-Hermoso affair: “It is not only about the fact of the kiss, but about the general behavior in the VIP box, on the ground, in the locker room. Or when a few hours later, the president of the federation dared to publicly insult all the people who criticized such a repugnant attitude. Unfortunately I’m not surprised, given his aggressiveness, his arrogance and his permanent contempt. It is not something isolated and even less spontaneous. The character that many of us know in private appeared in public”.

The leader puts pressure on the government in her text: “How the Spanish government will act will go down in history. He will certainly understand that these actions, and others, damage the image of Spain and the bid for the 2030 World Cup”. “It is unforgivable that the greatest success in the history of Spanish women’s sport is forever tarnished by the actions of the president of the RFEF, who stole the show from the only people who deserve it: female footballers”, concludes Beatriz Alvarez Mesa .
