Harry Belafonte, great African-American singer nicknamed “the calypso king”, who had distinguished himself in the fight for civil rights, died on Tuesday, April 25, in New York at the age of 96, announced his press officer, report several media, including CNN.

An emblematic artist of an era, he mixed West African, Caribbean and New York influences to create music that was a great success. The one who was also an actor had become a major activist for civil rights and had linked up with Martin Luther King.
