Hardware stores do not want to sell cannabis plants for the time being

Partial legalization of cannabis will come into force in Germany from Easter Monday. From then on it is also allowed to grow cannabis at home. Most hardware stores don’t want to offer plants or seeds for the time being.

Easter Monday is the deadline: From then on, cannabis is partially permitted in Germany. Up to three plants are allowed in the private apartment. But where should these come from? At least not from hardware stores for now.

Most of the markets initially do not want to include cannabis plants or corresponding seeds in their range. The Obi, Toom and Hornbach chains responded to a request from the dpa news agency unanimously not to respond to the partial legalization with a changed product range.

Bauhaus wants to wait for testing

Bauhaus still wants to examine the sale: “In addition to legal and moral aspects, this also involves issues such as limited quantities of seeds or the classification of cannabis plants as cultivated plants that can be sold freely and legally,” the company said. Whether practical solutions can be found will have an impact on the decision – as will the extent of customer demand.

The new cannabis law allows, in addition to the three plants at home, the possession of up to 25 grams of dried plant material for personal consumption. You can also carry this amount with you in public spaces. You can store up to 50 grams in your private apartment. According to common estimates, one gram of cannabis can be used to roll around three joints – more or less depending on your personal dosage. So 50 grams would be 150 joints.

criticism of the Federal Medical Association

From the perspective of those opposed to legalization, this is far too much. The German Medical Association calls 50 grams per month “a relevant amount,” “which corresponds to high-risk consumption and leads to cannabis-related disorders.” The Ministry of Health argues that legal cannabis must also be available in larger quantities if one wants to outdo the illegal black market.

Seeds, plants and harvested cannabis must be protected against theft and access by children – for example with lockable cupboards and rooms.
