Following the author’s method, what is so good, so new and exciting about Harald Jähner’s book on the Weimar Republic has to be demonstrated with an example. Jähner analyzes the new urban car traffic with a social parable: “In fact, the ability to calmly negotiate a roundabout, to get in time, to communicate quickly with brief gestures and looks, to change lanes gently, is in many respects like a party which one constantly changes the conversation partner and keeps people comfortably close and at the same time at a distance during sociable small talk.”
