Hans Jürgen Syberberg shows his new film “Demminer Gesänge” in Munich – Munich

The “New German Film” produced stars like Fassbinder, Herzog and Wenders, but also extremely idiosyncratic filmmakers like Hans Jürgen Syberberg. His films about Adolf Hitler, Winifred Wagner and Ludwig II were an annoyance for many, but also an event for some. After a break of almost thirty years, Syberberg has made a new film; On December 17th he wants to introduce it personally in the Munich workshop cinema. “Demminer Gesänge” takes us to the north-east of the republic: the now 88-year-old director grew up near the town of the title – and saw Demmin burn down in the last year of the war. Decades later he returned and had a destroyed building on the market square rebuilt for an art project – with scaffolding and tarpaulins.
