A woman of Yezidi-Kurdish descent was brutally murdered in Burgdorf near Hanover. The perpetrator is apparently her husband, from whom she wanted to separate.

Esra A. was stabbed with more than a dozen knife wounds, the perpetrator is said to be her husband. The crime occurs in a parking lot in Burgdorf, a small town near Hanover – on the open road and in front of several witnesses. The 37-year-old is said to have surprisingly attacked his wife from behind when she wanted to get into her car. This was announced by the public prosecutor’s office in Hildesheim, which took over the investigation.

The suspect is now in custody for murder. He and his wife are Yezidi Kurds, and the background to the crime is apparently an impending separation. “It seems true that there were problems in the marriage and that a separation was in the air,” said a spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office. Esra A. was only 35 years old.

Esra A. apparently wanted to separate from her husband

The family also confirms on the Instagram account that the planned separation was the motive for the femicide. As reported by the “Bild” newspaper, Esra A. had a job in a gas station and wanted to leave her husband. Then he is said to have killed her. The alleged perpetrator himself has not yet testified to the police.

At a mourning event in Hanover on Friday, more than 60 people commemorated the murdered Jesidin, who lived with her family in the Celle district. The rally was organized by the Yezidi Women’s Association, among others.

In the ethnic-religious group of Yazidis, femicides occur again and again when women want to build their own lives or separate from their partners. Men often react to this with violence, up to and including murder. Yazidis are only allowed to marry within their community. Around 200,000 Yazidis live in Germany, and the largest community has formed in Celle.
