Germany’s national women’s handball team celebrated its third victory at the end of the preliminary round of the World Cup and secured a good starting position in the fight for a place in the quarter-finals. The DHB selection won the dramatic group final against Hungary on Monday evening in front of 850 spectators in Llíria with 25:24 (14: 9) and went into the main round with 4: 0 points. “We shouldn’t have made it so exciting, but we deserved to win and we are happy,” said coach Henk Groener. In the main title, the team will start against the Republic of the Congo on Wednesday. Other opponents in the second phase of the tournament are Denmark and South Korea. The best throwers in the duel with Hungary were Julia Maidhof and Meike Schmelzer, each with five goals.
