First World Cup quarter-finals in eight years

For Germany it is the first participation in a World Cup quarter-finals in eight years. At the start of the main round, Groener’s team had easily prevailed against outsiders Republic of the Congo on Wednesday 29:18. Possible opponents in the round of eight next Tuesday are hosts Spain, South and Central American champions Brazil and Croatia.

Start made to measure

In front of the disappointing backdrop in the 1992 Olympic Hall, Bölk and Co. started like the fire brigade. The DHB selection consistently converted their ball wins on the defensive into counter-attack goals and, thanks to five hits in a row, led 5: 1 after less than five minutes. “Is good, further, very good! Further, further, further”, called the towering Grijseels to her teammates.

But the South Koreans fought their way back into the game, mainly thanks to their offensive tackle strength. Again and again the two-time Olympic champion sought the 1: 1 and equalized again in the middle of the first half (8: 8). But the German team stayed cool. Above all, Bölk and Grijseels now took the lead and always took responsibility when it really mattered. Bölk scored four times in the first section alone (in five attempts), playmaker Grijseels scored her sixth goal (in six attempts) just before half-time to 19:16.

Defense increases in half-time two

Even after the break, the German team dominated the game. At the back the defense increased with every minute, at the front it was mainly – of course – Bölk and Grijseels who scored. When Xenia Smits finally increased to 28:22 after 45 minutes, a preliminary decision had been made.
