Hanau: sadness and bewilderment after two child murders

After the murder of two siblings in Hanau, the city is in shock. In the meantime, there are increasing indications of problems within the family and local criticism of the responsible authorities. Many ask themselves: Could the crime have been prevented?

A postcard lies in front of a gray skyscraper in Hanau. A citizen of the city wrote it. It says: “We are sad. Sad that your life was taken from you. Angry that you were abandoned! The youth welfare office failed across the board.” It also says: “Rest in peace, you angels.”

Stuffed animals lie around the card: cuddly polar bears, teddies, a stuffed penguin, a koala bear. Grave candles and tea lights that form hearts. Colorful bouquets of flowers, tulips and roses. They cover what has been bothering Hanau since Wednesday: the traces of a murder. Someone killed two kids here.

In front of the family’s house, the two murdered children are remembered with flowers, stuffed animals and candles
