The emergency services stopped searching for the missing man at around 10 p.m. on Wednesday. According to the fire brigade, the danger for the divers had become too great with the oncoming tide and the rapid current in the Elbe, which was many meters deep at this point. In addition, the water was only six degrees, meaning a life rescue was ruled out after around four hours, a police spokeswoman said on Thursday morning.

It is the second ship accident in Hamburg within two days. A freighter carrying 3,500 liters of diesel and 1,400 tons of potassium chloride sank on Tuesday. According to the environmental agency, 5,000 square meters of water was contaminated by leaking diesel.
