The smoke in the galley left the crew of a plane on the way to Sweden no choice – they landed in the Hanseatic city out of schedule.

A smoking coffee machine caused a Lufthansa plane en route from Frankfurt to Gothenburg to crash into an unscheduled crash Hamburg stopped over. As a Lufthansa spokesman said upon request, Lufthansa flight LH818 made a precautionary stopover in Hamburg in the evening due to a brief local smoke development in the front galley.

The cockpit crew declared an air emergency in order to get a priority landing in Hamburg. The Airbus A319 landed normally and taxied to the gate independently, and the passengers left the aircraft normally, Lufthansa said.

The cause of the smoke is now being examined in detail by technicians. According to initial findings, a coffee machine was defective. There was no danger for guests and crew at any time during the flight. The passengers would fly on to Gothenburg on a replacement plane that evening.
