6:35 a.m.: Brazil convenes UN Security Council meeting for Friday
Brazil, which currently chairs the UN Security Council, has called a new meeting of this body for Friday to address the situation in the Gaza Strip. The head of Brazilian diplomacy Mauro Vieira interrupted a tour of Asia to go to New York, “in order to participate” in person in this meeting.
Brazil had already called an emergency meeting on the situation in Israel and the Gaza Strip on October 8, the day after Hamas’ surprise and unprecedented offensive. At the end of this meeting, the members of the Council, regularly divided on the Israeli-Palestinian issue, had not managed to agree to unanimously condemn this attack.
