“Wash, cut, blow-dry once, please”: Many people plan to visit the hairdresser regularly. But the intervals between the appointments are getting longer – and that worries the troubled trades. Even half a year after reopening their salons, Germany’s hairdressers for the most part continue to struggle with the consequences of the Corona crisis. “At first we had an enormous number of visitors because people finally wanted to go to the hairdresser again,” said the general manager of the Central Association of the German Hairdressing Trade, Jörg Müller. In the past few weeks, however, it was noticeable that many customers do not go to the hairdresser as often. This also reduces sales. Shortly before Christmas 2020, the hairdressers had to close and were only allowed to reopen on March 1st. There are no official sales figures for the time after that. The industry is affected differently, so Müller: Salons that rely on walk-in customers would have more losses than hairdressers, who have many regular customers and invest more time for one customer. The location also plays a role: Hairdressers in particular would have very high losses in shopping centers.
