Craftsmen are in demand. And it is no different with the material that they need for their work: The community of Haar felt this bitterly when they were planning to renovate the old Maria Stadler House. After work on the roof had been advertised three times, they finally gave up and had to look around for an alternative solution to the problem. Now the roof, which has a glass dome on its ridge, is easily converted and partially closed. For a major renovation, companies would have asked 300 percent more than had been calculated. The conversion is urgently needed, also because the heat has so far been accumulating under the roof. The previous residents experienced this painfully. The idea of a glass roof had its charm. The upper floor was flooded with light. But when seniors were still housed there in a care ward, it was a challenge in summer to keep the temperatures down to a bearable level. The upper floor heated up, fans only partially brought relief. Apartments are now being built there for staff who work in day-care centers or in senior citizens’ homes. The problem should be resolved, especially with a view to climate change and rising temperatures. The building authorities have suggested four ways of doing this without completely darkening the corridors. In the end, it turned out to be unaffordable to replace the aluminum construction, then to close the roof in parts with panels and in parts to apply translucent photovoltaic glazing. In order to continue using the basic construction, opaque panels are installed on 66 percent of the surface, which block out some of the light and heat. On the rest of the current glass roof, there are solar modules.
